Creating an LGBT-Friendly Practice: Bridging Multicultural Health Care Gaps
Over one million of our members are estimated to identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT), as do almost 1,500 WellPoint associates. The primary care of LGBT populations is compromised by gaps in care. These gaps include documented deficiencies in the LGBT cultural competence of health care professionals. Further, these gaps have negative implications on clinical quality and health outcomes.
To address this issue, WellPoint's Multicultural Health Programs is collaborating with ANGLE (LGBT Associate Resource Group) to develop a fully-funded, innovative eTraining module for providers and associates. Designed to highlight the specific concerns of LGBT populations and provide strategies for enhancing the quality of provider/LGBT patient interactions, this eTraining positions WellPoint as an industry vanguard and demonstrates our corporate commitment to providing trusted and caring solutions for everyone, including our LGBT customers.
