Notice of Changes to the Georgia State Continuation Laws
On May 20, 2010, the state continuation law was amended to lengthen the state continuation period with premium reduction from nine months to up to a total of 15 months for Assistance Eligible Individuals (AEIs).
AEIs who were on state continuation with premium reduction on May 20, 2010 or who elected state continuation on or after that date will have their continuation extended for up to a total of 15 months as long as they continue to meet the eligibility requirements. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia (BCBSGa) has updated its records to reflect the newly lengthened state continuation period for these AEIs.
An AEI who exhausted the nine months state continuation with premium reduction prior to May 20, 2010 may be able to extend state continuation coverage for the remainder of the newly lengthened 15 month period as long as they meet the eligibility requirements. In order to extend state continuation with premium reduction these AEIs must complete a Continuation Coverage Extension Form and return it to their former employer as soon as possible. The extension ends no later than 15 months from the original effective date of the continuation coverage.
What you need to do:
If you receive a completed Continuation Coverage Extension Form from an AEI who exhausted the nine month state continuation, you are requested to complete an Attestation Form and return it to subsequent membership department.
