Managing Your Diabetes

PW_A123669
If you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, you may want to talk with your physician about these nationally recommended guidelines. They may help you maintain or improve your current health, help control your diabetes, and help you try to avoid serious health problems in the future. Our diabetes care program has adopted guidelines from the American Diabetes Association which includes:
Keep routine appointments with your doctor to help manage your diabetes.
Have blood pressure and weight checked regularly.
If you smoke, make plans to quit.
Stay physically active.
Take your medications as prescribed by your doctor.
Monitor your blood sugar regularly, and ask your doctor about having the hemoglobin A1c test at least twice a year.
Have a yearly dilated eye exam. (This is not the same as a vision test.)
Have a yearly cholesterol check.
Have two simple tests each year to check for kidney disease, including a urine test for albumin and a blood test for creatinine.
Have a yearly flu shot.
Ask your doctor about a pneumonia immunization.
Check your feet daily for redness, sores, or numbness.
Follow a meal plan tailored to your personal tastes and nutritional needs.
High blood sugar can cause serious problems— even if you feel fine.
