Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia Foundation Joins with HealthMPowers to Launch New Fitness Awareness Program
May 23, 2013
ATLANTA -- (May 23, 2013) – Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia Foundation (BCBSGa) is partnering with HealthMPowers to launch a new elementary school based fitness program designed to get elementary school children fit and active. The initiative begins with the new school year in August and encourages every elementary school in Georgia to include an additional 30 minutes of physical activity for students each day. The initiative was launched at a news conference on Wednesday, May 22 at Bibb Central High School in Macon, Ga.
The initiative is being supported by the Georgia Department of Public Health and the Georgia Department of Education. These state agencies recognize the importance of the connection between body and brain, and are committed to providing students with more opportunities to meet their health and academic goals. “The data is clear and the message cannot be ignored: We must get our students moving more during the school day. Physical activity means higher test scores, increased attention in class and a healthier student population. To make this possible, we need your help,” said State School Superintendent John Barge, Ph.D., and DPH Commissioner Brenda Fitzgerald, M.D., in a joint letter to superintendents.
For Blue Cross and Blue Shield, this campaign means healthier lifestyles for children that lead to healthier choices in adulthood. It also means the 40 schools in the pilot program will be the vanguard for the rest of the state. “HealthMPowers and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia are helping to improve our state’s schools by sponsoring this program and providing the necessary support, resources, training and equipment to get our school children active,” said Morgan Kendrick, President of BCBSGa.
HealthMPowers is a unique, coordinated initiative designed to increase health knowledge and promote health-enhancing behaviors among youth by providing state-of-the-art programming in the school setting. Health education lessons are presented in a memorable and interactive way helping each student build a foundation for making responsible health decisions throughout the course of his or her life. By working in collaboration with teachers and parents, HealthMPowers helps build the supportive environment necessary for the adoption of health-enhancing behaviors. Health promotion programs and services are provided to more than 100 schools across the state reaching over 50,000 and their teachers and families. For more information, visit www.healthmpowers.org.
