Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia Announces New Building Construction to House Columbus Employees

Groundbreaking in the summer of 2014

ATLANTA – Jan. 23, 2014 – Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia (BCBSGa), the state’s largest health solutions company, today announced it will build a new facility to house employees currently housed in two separate Columbus facilities. The new building will seat 2,000 workers and be constructed in the Muscogee Technology Park.

The new facility will replace an existing facility that BCBSGa has owned since 1958 on Warm Springs Road and a smaller leased facility in the Muscogee Technology Park.

“This new building will be a high-tech, state-of-the-art flagship operations center for our business,” said Morgan Kendrick, President of BCBSGa.

BCBSGa worked closely with the Greater Columbus Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Department of Economic Development to make this new building a reality.

“Georgia has taken the lead in the healthcare industry, and this is due in part to innovative companies such as BCBSGa,” said Chris Carr, commissioner of the Georgia Department of Economic Development. “This expansion not only highlights our ability to attract investment from a premier healthcare company, but it also underscores the strength of our quality workforce and No. 1 business climate.”

BCBSGa has seen its membership grow substantially in 2013 and 2014 with the addition of the State Health Benefit Plan and membership added through the Health Insurance Exchange and currently serves almost 3 million Georgians.  BCBSGa added more than 800 jobs in Columbus in 2013 to accommodate this growth.

“Today's announcement affirms Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia's commitment to grow its presence in Columbus,” said Dick Ellis, chairman of the Development Authority of Columbus. "We have been working with them on this project for over a year and I'm proud of the work the Chamber's economic development team has done to get us to this point."

Groundbreaking for the new building will take place sometime in the summer of 2014 with an expected completion date of late summer 2015.
