5 Ways to Stay Cool in the Heat

Tips to Breathe Easier During Warmer Months

When the temperature rises, your body must work harder, which requires more oxygen. The result: Breathing is more difficult. Here’s how to tolerate the heat when living with COPD.

Stay Indoors

This helps the body maintain a temperature of 98.6, which will keep your breathing more regular. If you don’t have an air conditioner, spend a couple of hours in a movie theater, at a store, or at an air-conditioned neighbor’s house. Taking a cool shower or bath, or putting a cold, wet cloth or ice pack under your arm or on your neck, can also cool you off.

Stay Hydrated 

Drink eight full glasses of water each day, on average, to help regulate body temperature.  Being dehydrated makes the body work harder.

Be Aware of Allergies

Plants and allergens can exacerbate COPD. Be aware of which ones affect you. Talk to your doctor about selecting allergy medications that will best support your breathing.

Combat Humidity

Purchase a small humidifier for your home and bedroom. It can drastically improve your ability to breathe. Be sure to monitor humidity levels and keep your humidifier clean. Dirty humidifiers can breed mold or bacteria.

Be Active

Exercise is crucial to maintaining a healthy, positive lifestyle, and it may reduce shortness of breath.
