Georgia Medicare Member Reduces Waist Size and Bolsters Outlook on Life
SilverSneakers® Fitness Program Offered by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia Celebrates Five Years in Georgia
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), being physically active contributes substantially to healthy aging. For example, regular physical activity can help prevent or control many of the health problems (e.g., high blood pressure, depression, obesity and diabetes) that often reduce the quality and length of life for older adults.
Dick Slate is living proof of that. Mr. Slate, 76, joined the Healthways SilverSneakers® Fitness Program at his gym in Douglasville, Georgia, five years ago, and has been working out faithfully 2 or 3 times a week ever since.
The retired marketing employee and historian for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has seen the fruits of his labor. Mr. Slate credits a healthy diet and exercise at SilverSneakers with his 80-pound weight loss, as well as restoring his positive outlook on life after the death of his wife.
“I would tell anyone (not participating in the program) that they are cheating themselves out of a good time meeting people,” said Slate. “SilverSneakers tones you up and cures whatever ails you. It’s just like going to the store or going to the doctor, you just make time to do it.”
The SilverSneakers Fitness Program, a product of Healthways, an independent company, is the nation’s leading exercise program designed exclusively for older adults and is available at no additional cost beyond the monthly premium paid by members of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia’s (BCBSGa) 65 Plus Medicare Supplement and BlueValue Secure HMO plans.
In Georgia, where approximately 10.4 percent of the population is enrolled in Medicare, BCBSGa members can participate in SilverSneakers at one of 83 locations across the state.
“We are proud to celebrate five years of partnership with SilverSneakers, and it is stories like Mr. Slate’s that illustrate how the program is making a difference in the lives of our Medicare members,” said Monye Connolly, president, BCBSGa. “We understand the unique needs and concerns seniors have in regard to their health, and our offering of the Healthways SilverSneakers Fitness Program is one way that we are meeting these needs.”
SilverSneakers and BCBSGa will host an event to celebrate five years in Georgia on Wednesday, August 20, at Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta, 5342 Tilly Mill Rd., Dunwoody, GA 30338. The event will include a SilverSneakers class at 11 a.m. as well as a complimentary lunch at noon. The luncheon guest speaker, Dr. Mary J. Albert, of Resurgens Orthopedics, is nationally recognized for her early work in Orthopedic Traumatology and Total Joint Replacement.
