free preventive care

To help you stay healthy, Medicare covers preventive care as long as you get the care from a doctor who takes Medicare. This care includes:

  • A yearly wellness visit - if you're new to Medicare, a "Welcome to Medicare" preventive visit is covered at no charge during your first year of Part B coverage. You see your doctor and make a personal preventive care plan.
  • Help on how to quit smoking - counseling to help you stop smoking.
  • Screenings for cancer and other diseases - you don't have to pay the Medicare Part B deductible or copay for certain screenings, such as:
    • Diabetes screening
    • Flu shot
    • Mammograms
    • Bone mass measurement (or bone density test)
    • Cholesterol and cardiovascular tests

How it impacts you

The law makes it easier to get these tests, screenings and other care, so you can prevent health problems or catch them before they get worse. The sooner you find out about a condition, the better you and your doctor can treat it so it doesn't become serious.

What will I pay for preventive care?

For some preventive care, you pay nothing for the service. However, for certain services, you may have to pay coinsurance for the office visit.

How can I get ready for my wellness visit?

If you have questions about your health, write them down so you don't forget to ask your doctor.

Here are some questions you can ask your doctor about a test:

  • Do I need the test?
  • How is the test done?
  • What are the test's benefits and risks?
  • How do I prepare for the test?
  • When will I get the results
  • What do I do after getting the results?

I have a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan. Can I also get free preventive care?

Check with your health plan to find out if preventive care is covered and what you would pay for it
