Radio Disney and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia Team Up This Fall To Support Childhood Health and Wellness
ATLANTA - September 3, 2009 - Radio Disney WDWD AM 590 Atlanta has teamed with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia (BCBSGA) to support childhood health and wellness throughout the Greater Atlanta community. "Move It!" is Radio Disney's youth and family fitness program that encourages an active lifestyle for kids and adults, and serves as an outlet for BCBSGA to promote healthy living and the fun and entertaining ways it can be achieved.
"We're excited to have BCBSGA on board for our in-school program, Move it!," said Shawn Serra, Station Manager, Radio Disney AM 590. "Our objective to promote youth and family health and wellness aligns perfectly with that of BCBSGA's and we're looking forward to seeing a real impact on the students this year."
Starting this month and running through the end of October, Radio Disney's Road Crew will visit 10 elementary schools around the Atlanta metro area implementing the "Move It!" program. Designed to motivate kids and families to participate in recreational activities together, "Move It!" demonstrates a variety of fun, movement-based activities as a simple and easy way for kids and parents to get and stay active.
"School and community programs like Move it! help reenergize fitness and movement through fun activities that involve the entire family," said Monye Connolly, President, BCBSGA. "Having a direct impact on the well-being of the customers we serve and the overall health of Georgia's communities is our mission, which is why we chose to partner with Radio Disney." Connolly serves as the voice of Radio Disney's "Get Healthy" commercials currently airing on WDWD 590 AM, also running through the end of October.
"Studies show that regular physical activity in childhood and adolescence can: improve strength and endurance, build healthy bones and muscles, help control weight, reduce anxiety and stress, increase self-esteem, and improve blood pressure and cholesterol levels," said Dr. Robert McCormack, Medical Director, BCBSGA. "Inactivity during childhood and adolescence increases the likelihood of being inactive as an adult, which can increase the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure."
This summer and fall, select Radio Disney events, which are free to the public, will feature interactive areas hosted by BCBSGA with activities for families that encourage fun movement through jump rope and hula hoop contests, relay races and many others. The Wizards of Waverly Place Premier Party, which took place Friday, Aug. 28, at Atlantic Station, gathered hundreds of children and parents together for a fun-filled evening of jump rope, hula hoop, soccer kick and basketball free-throw events and a viewing of the Wizards of Waverly Place Movie on a large inflatable movie screen. The next free event, the Atlanta Parent Block Party, will take place on Oct. 10, from Noon to 2 p.m., at Mercer University's Atlanta campus and will be host to numerous activities and events.
